“Virgínia and Adelaide” tells the story of the encounter between two extraordinary women: the Brazilian Virgínia Bicudo and the German Adelaide Koch. Virgínia, a Black woman, was the first Brazilian psychoanalyst. Adelaide, a Jewish psychoanalyst, arrived in Brazil fleeing the Nazi regime. They met in November 1937, in São Paulo, as Getúlio Vargas was declaring the Estado Novo. Doctor and patient for five years, they later became colleagues and lifelong friends. Virgínia and Adelaide confronted racism and played an active role in consolidating and spreading psychoanalysis in Brazil, paving the way for new generations.
