Inspired by Glauber Rocha’s concept of Sur-Realismo, this program celebrates filmmakers who seamlessly merge reality, dreams, and politics. Featuring legendary pioneers such as Luis Buñuel (The Exterminating Angel), Glauber Rocha (Black God, White Devil), and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Los Sobrevivientes), alongside contemporary voices like Pablo Berger (Blancanieves), the showcase highlights how Ibero-American cinema intertwines the fantastical with profound social and historical themes.
The program includes screenings of two groundbreaking short films—Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel’s Un Chien Andalou and Álvaro Cepeda Zamudio & Gabriel García Márquez’s La Langosta Azul—culminating in conversation with distinguished scholar Ana María Hernández (CUNY).
