Part 1 of HFFNY's homage to Nicolás Guillén Landrián includes the following short films, all subtitled in English and newly restored.


  • EN UN BARRIO VIEJO 1963 | 9 min A cinematic portrait of the people who lived in the old part of the city in Havana, a few years after the victory of the Revolution.

  • LOS DEL BAILE

    1965 | 10 min People dance and drink during a performance of Pello el Afrokán, inventor of the so-called Mozambique Rhythm.

  • OCIEL DEL TOA

    1965 | 17 min The center of the documentary is the river of Toa, in the oriental zone of the island, and the men who live and work in it, in between these Ociel, a sixteen year-old young man that leads the spectator from his subjective world to the family, various characters of the environment and to all the stasis of the river that he travels with his cayuca.

  • COFFEA ARÁBIGA

    1968 | 18 min A didactic documentary that, through an innovative approach using experimental montage, boards the development of the technicalities of coffee, from its agricultural to industrial processes.

  • TALLER DE LÍNEA Y 18

    1971 | 15 min

    The construction of a bus as an emergency way of solving the acute problems of public transportation.

  • EN UN BARRIO VIEJO

    1963 | 9 min

    Retrato de la gente que vive en la parte vieja de la ciudad de La Habana, pocos años después del triunfo de la Revolución.


  • LOS DEL BAILE

    1965 | 10 min

    El documental Los del baile es una pieza de Cine-ensayo sobre el baile popular contrapuesto al mundo subjetivo de los bailadores y sus evoluciones durante una actuación de la Orquesta de Pello el Afrokán.


  • OCIEL DEL TOA

    1965 | 17 min

    El centro del documental es el río Toa, en la zona oriental de la isla, y los hombres que viven y trabajan en él, entre estos Ociel, un muchacho de dieciséis años que conduce al espectador desde su mundo subjetivo a la familia, a varios personajes del entorno y a todo el estatismo del río que recorre con su cayuca.


  • COFFEA ARÁBIGA

    1968 | 18 min

    Documental didáctico que, de forma novedosa y con un montaje experimental, aborda el desarrollo de las técnicas del café, desde su proceso agrario hasta su proceso industrial.


  • TALLER DE LÍNEA Y 18

    1971 | 15 min

    La construcción de ómnibus como una forma de solución de emergencia al agudo problema del transporte urbano.

NICOLÁS GUILLÉN LANDRIÁN

Born in Camagüey, in central Cuba, the son of an attorney – a prominent advocate of Camagüey sugar workers – the celebrated Afro-Cuban filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938-2003) worked intermittently at the Cuban National Film Institute (ICAIC) in Havana from the early 1960s to the early 1970s, first as a production assistant and later as a director primarily in the newsreel and scientific documentary division.

Nacido en Camagüey, en Cuba central, el hijo de un abogado–un destacado defensor de los azucareros de Camagüey–el celebrado Afro-Cubano cineasta Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938-2003) trabajó intermitentemente en el instituto nacional de cine de Cuba (Cuban National Film Institute (ICAIC)) en Habana desde los tempranos 1960s hasta los tempranos 1970s, primero como asistente de producción y despues como director antetodo en la division noticiero y documental cientÍfico.
