Bongo Itá offers a rare close-up of the Ecoria Enyéne Idia Abakuá religious-mutualist society, founded by black slaves in 1836. Cuba is the only country where the Abakuá secret society is present. The practices of the Abakuá groups or powers, exclusively for men, only developed in Havana, Cárdenas and Matanzas, where they adapted to a hostile environment and survived to this day. The documentary reveals the Abakuá reality through the various points of view of members of the cult, who argue about their influence on current Cuban society, while showing the generational differences in their membership. It also addresses aspects related to its origin and development on the island, as well as the participation of its members in important historical events.

Bongo Itá es un documental sobre la sociedad religiosa-mutualista Ecoria Enyéne Idia Abakuá, fundada por negros esclavos en 1836. Cuba es el único país donde está presente la sociedad secreta Abakuá. Las prácticas de las agrupaciones o potencias abakuá, exclusivas para hombres, solo se desarrollaron en La Habana, Cárdenas y Matanzas, donde se adaptaron a un entorno hostil y sobrevivieron hasta nuestros días. El documental permite conocer la realidad abakuá a través de diversos puntos de vista de miembros del culto, quienes argumentan sobre su influencia en la sociedad cubana actual, al tiempo que muestra las diferencias generacionales en su membresía. También aborda aspectos relacionados con su origen y desarrollo en la isla, así como la participación de sus integrantes en importantes hechos históricos.

Mayckell Pedrero Mariol (Cuba, 1975) is a Cinematography graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana. He started his career in film at the Estudios de Animación ICAIC, the Cuban Film Institute’s renowned animation production lab, where he collaborated in more than 80 films and clips. His second film “Revolution”, a polemic music documentary about the Cuban underground hip-hoppers Los Aldeanos, premiered at IDFA and won five awards at the 9th Festival of Young Filmmakers in Havana, including the Grand Prize.

Mayckell Pedrero Mariol (Cuba, 1975), es realizador, director de fotografía y animador. Cursó Dirección de Fotografía en el ISA-Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana. Se inició en el audiovisual en los Estudios de Animación ICAIC, donde ha intervenido como animador en más de 80 filmes. Su documental “Revolution” sobre el grupo de hiphop underground cubano Los Aldeanos, ganó cinco premios en la Muestra Nacional de Jóvenes Realizadores, incluido al correspondiente a mejor documental y se tornó objeto de polémicas y culto en su país. Revolution tuvo su estreno internacional en el IDFA.
