Mercedes is a music teacher who dreams of the day her husband will return home from the United States. He has continued to write and send her monthly checks. Mercedes lives with her children: the eldest Sebastián has political aspirations and attempts to maintain his family together; Alicia, a university student who hopes to travel to the US in search for her father; and Javier, the youngest, who follows his mother’s musical steps as a flute player.
